Good morning … I’m Hans laetz reporting.

Tenth Straight Day Of Santa Anas

Malibu continues under Red Flag Warnings for the tenth straight day.

Little change is expected through Thursday.

The extended period of dry, warm airflow will continue, but only half as strong as what occurred last week.

We can expect daily winds coming at us over the mountains at around 8 to 15 miles per hour.

Some gusts up around 30 miles an hour are possible at the windiest places.

The air will remain incredibly dry … and there will not be any moist ocean air coming ashore at night to help with the recoveries.

Thomas Fire Churns West

The Thomas Fire continues to churn through the foothills above Santa Barbara.

Now … at 234 thousand plus acres.

It only grew 17-hundred acres yesterday.

Malibu has been spared from smoke and ash.

High altitude clouds of ash are blowing west and north … satellite pictures show the browns cloud racing as far north as Eureka California.

The fire broke out one week ago … 9 p-m a week ago Monday.

Now 20 percent contained.

7 thousand firefighters on the job.

18 thousand residences threatened right now … still.

And 869 structures destroyed.

The fire is still churning through the foothills north of Carpinteria … Summerland … and Montecito.

Evacuations continue as far west as Mission Canyon in Santa Barbara.

A large fire front was burning above Carpinteria High School this morning.

Avocado groves east of Fillmore were also on fire this morning.

If there is one bright spot … it’s how few casualties there have been during the disaster.

One person has been killed: a 70-year-old woman from Santa Paula woman was killed in a car crash as she attempted to evacuate.

Fire Victims Find Replacement Policies Fall Way, Way Short

Hundreds of Bay Area residents who lost their homes in the October wildfires are finding themselves underinsured … and their replacement insurance policies are not enough money.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat newspaper reports that many displaced homeowners are discovering that they will likely have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars out of pocket .. to replace their homes.

One attorney says some policyholders could be out more than $1 million in costs.

The lawyer in Santa Rosa says he’s talked to 200 fire victims from the Wine Country fires.

97 percent of them were found to be underinsured.

In Sonoma County alone … 7 billion dollars in damage claims have been filed.

Insurance companies have paid out almost 2.4 billion dollars so far.

The issue … did the insurance carriers underprice their policies that supposedly cover the overall cost of rebuilding replacement homes???

Or …. did policyholders cheap out and buy insufficient coverage???

The customers may have opted for lower premiums …. and might have to live with the choices they made.

This story from the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

Three Malibu High ninth graders who founded a new school club called The Education Operation.

They traveled to Richmond last week to help a socioeconomically disadvantaged fourth grade classroom.

Why Richmond … up in the Bay Area?

The teacher is 2013 Malibu high graduate Yasi Afsharnive.

The Education Operation’s goal .. the kids say … is to make school a better place for students who don’t have the resources or opportunities to have a positive experience with their education.

the Malibu students brought books, ornaments, and home made cookies in hand.

The Malibu kids helped the younger ones pick books for the students’ upcoming book reports

“This experience caused me to become beyond grateful for the school I attend, the resources I take for granted, and the generosity of our community. This is only the beginning of our intentions to help,” says club president Kimya Afshar. “We send out thanks to everyone who made this trip possible.”

The small group of Malibu kids plans to do this through book drives, fundraisers, bake sales, and any other ways they can help.
