Homeowners in Malibu and throughout the Westside of Los Angeles may be paid a visit by the County of Los Angeles Department of Agriculture Commissioner/Weights and Measures if they haven’t already. In an effort to control a serious pest infestation, the department is installing detection traps to catch Japanese Beetles and Gypsy Moths — both insects able to cause considerable damage to trees and lawns. Two homes per square mile will be asked to cooperate and let inspectors install the traps near rose bushes or shrubbery. An agriculture spokesperson called the traps “bio-holistic” and “natural” because no pesticides are used. The insects, according to experts, can be noxious and have been known to destroy grapevines and deforest trees. Six hundred traps in all will be installed from Palos Verdes to Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Agoura and Topanga. The traps will be collected in August.
