Multimedia Director Julie Ellerton hit the streets this week to ask: ‘What do you think about Malibu becoming a sanctuary city?’
“I started this street talk a few weeks back — before the phantom ‘Sanctuary City’ sign was posted. Locals had strong opinions on the subject but were uncomfortable with their opinion being published. At least 15 people in one day whispered their concerns. It seems Malibu folks feared they would be judged, shunned or ostracized by members of the community if they shared their thoughts. I started to think the story might not be about ‘Sanctuary City’ anymore but about intolerance for diverse points of view within our community.”

“I kind of resented the fact that the city council did it without letting us have notice, so we could have some public input. It’s as simple as that. I don’t like it, I don’t like being a Sanctuary City, especially without knowing about it beforehand. I just don’t like people kind of pulling a fast one.”- Sara Grisanti
“‘Sanctuary City,’ are you kidding me? Malibu belongs to Mexico, there are still some ranch lands that are being investigated as we speak, you’ll find out.”- Howdy Kabrins
“I think from my Christian background, I do believe that we are all equal and we need to think about others who are less fortunate than ourselves and I think everyone has a story and we need to hear it. So I’m proud of Malibu for speaking out.”-Sky Stipanowich
