Malibu’s Marlin Club won the 2016 Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament on Aug. 1. Over the five-day event the club tagged four marlins that weighed 100-300 pounds each, amounting to a total score of 1,200 points.
Malibu local and team captain Steve Spina was particularly excited about the win.
“Over the years, this has become like the Olympics of sportfishing,” Spina said in an email. “I fish in a lot of tournaments, but this is one of my favorites.”
Every fish under 300 pounds is tagged and released back into the wild. The tags provide researchers like National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency with valuable information on migration patterns of sea creatures.
