The Malibu Community Labor Exchange recently named Al Sturgeon as its new executive director. The exchange provides opportunities for day work with the aim of helping day laborers find regular employment.

Sturgeon moved to Malibu with his family thee years ago to attend Pepperdine University School of Law. After graduating, he and his wife Jody decided to remain in Malibu.

Sturgeon first heard about the labor exchange while preparing sack lunches for workers. He has been concerned with helping those in his community for more than 20 years. He directed one of the largest Habitat for Humanity affiliates responding to those who lost their homes after Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters on the Mississippi coast.

Sturgeon’s vision is that the labor exchange will become a community organization, reflecting the entire community. He says he is still recruiting a diverse set of board members to represent the various community voices.
