The County of Los Angeles Public Health Department has issued a beach advisory warning swimmers, surfers, paddle boarders and others who enjoy beaches up and down L.A. County to avoid waters through Tuesday evening, Jan. 13, following heavy rains.
Runoff from rain storms often increases bacteria levels in coastal waters, according to the Environmental Health Department, which warns conditions could remain dangerous for up to three days following heavy rains over the weekend.
“The Department of Public Health recommends that beach users avoid contact with ocean water for a period of 3 days after significant rainfall, especially near flowing storm drains, creeks and rivers,” the advisory reads.
The beach advisory is to be lifted at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening, except in the case of further rainstorms in the county.
