[Update: 7 p.m.] Ventura County Fire Department spokespeople confirmed on social media Tuesday evening that a dog was found alive in the surf line. The dog, named Jake, has been rescued unharmed and is being cared for by volunteers on scene.
Pacific Coast Highway was closed in both directions Tuesday evening due to a fatal crash that occurred about 5 p.m. By 5:19 p.m. northbound traffic was moving while southbound lanes remained closed.
A white “Honda Accord type vehicle” was found crashed on the rocks below Pacific Coast Highway, partially submerged in ocean water, according to information from the California Highway Patrol. A team of first responders from Ventura County including the Ventura County Fire Department aided in the attempted rescue, which resulted in one known fatality.
The coroner was expected to arrive on scene around 6:15 p.m.
Crews were expected to “remain on scene approximately one hour,” according to a tweet sent out by Ventura County Fire Department spokespeople at 5:51 p.m., in search of possible further victims.
