Members of the Malibu City Council criticized new districts drawn by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission at a public input meeting of the Commission Thursday night in Culver City. The new U.S. Congressional and state senate districts, redrawn after the release of the 2010 U.S. Census results, separate Malibu from neighboring cities with common interests such as Calabasas and Santa Monica. Mayor Pro Tem Laura Rosenthal and Councilmember Lou La Monte both spoke out against the redrawn districts, which will not be finalized until August.
“The present district lines have finally achieved community interest criteria we’re all looking for,” said LaMonte. “The new proposed district lines don’t achieve the things we have now.”
