Steve Spina of the Malibu Marlin Club and his team, comprised of Heather Masunaga, Brent Masunaga and Captain Kerwin Masunaga, earned enough points throughout seven tournaments to be named first place in the Maui Jim Marlin Series recently.
The team caught a 226-pound yellow fin tuna, or ahi, that took first place in the Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club’s Rock ‘n Reel Tournament. The fishers also caught two other tunas, weighing in at 189.5 and 110 pounds. The massive catches earned the team a total of 1,140 points in the competition and more than $17,000 in prize money.
Memorable wins for the team include a 336-pound tuna caught at the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament last October and a giant marlin reeled in after a two-hour and 47-minute fight at the 51st annual Hawaii International Billfish Tournament in Kona, Hawaii last summer.
