A paddle out was held for recently deceased Matthew Awbrey, Malibu High School class of 2015, on Sunday, Nov. 12, at Surfrider Beach. Mike Moss and Scott Lewis, Awbrey’s surfing coaches at MHS, led the memorial event.
Moss and six other fellow surfers shared their stories on Awbrey and his surfing tales.
A Coast Guard helicopter flew over the paddle out midway through the ceremony.
In an email to The Malibu Times, Awbrey’s mother Gigi said, “The outpouring of kindness and support from many [of] the ‘moms’ and others in [the] community is unbelievable. My son’s death was not in vain; it truly brought the best out of people that I know I will always remember and appreciate.”
