Grief is an elusive critter

Remembering a death, Dylan Thomas wrote it happened just a “grief ago.” But grief is an elusive critter. It scurries around trying to find an appropriate voice to express a profound sense of loss.

Ed Lipnick died last week. Those who only knew Ed as the guy who chaired Malibu’s Planning Commission will remember a man who was always respectful of the people who appeared before him and the law that he tried to balance logically and fairly. Individually, the voice of our grief may be soft and muted, but collectively it shouts that Malibu has lost a dedicated leader who set an example for his community by reminding us that dignity and civility still count for something. Ed was a friend of mine and of Malibu for over 30 years. Now, when I feel his absence, I will remember he left us just a “grief ago.”
