Fish tale disturbing

I am saddened to see that the photo celebrating man’s triumph over nature (“Malibu fisherman reels in 684-pound marlin,” Sept. 6) is from 2012 and not the 1950s. How is it possible to celebrate the gratuitous killing of one of Earth’s great creatures, a mythical jewel of the sea? Would this photo appear in your paper if the trophy had been a tiger, gazelle or orangutan? Of course, not. There is no difference but the one created in thinking, “it’s just a fish.”

I look forward to the day when marine creatures, including important large predators such as this marlin, are granted protection from such egregious and violent activities and when photos such as these join the many shameful illustrations of humanity’s “former” ignorance. Mr. Spina and the Malibu Marlin Club, just because it’s still legal doesn’t mean you should do it.
