An online fundraiser has been started to raise money for Mayor Pro Tem Jefferson “Zuma Jay” Wagner’s legal defense, following an investigation into alleged perjury by the district attorney’s office.
The fundraiser was founded by Candace Brown, Wagner’s longtime partner.
“We need to hire a lawyer right away to defend Malibu City Councilman Jefferson ‘Zuma Jay’ Wagner,” Brown wrote in the description for the fundraiser, hosted on GoFundMe. “All money raised will be used exclusively for legal expenses.”
The campaign was founded on June 3 and, as of press time on Tuesday, June 5, had raised nearly $14,000 of its $20,000 goal. Notable donors included Janet Friesen Peak, wife to Council Member Skylar Peak, who donated $2,000, and Planning Commissioner John Mazza (and his wife Robby), who donated $1,500.
In total, 68 individuals or families had donated within two days of the founding of the GoFundMe campaign.
