Rain once again causes a blackout … or maybe two blackouts … at western Malibu.
And after taking the evening off … we got another two tenths of an inch of steady and gentle rain overnight.
Coastal is unhappy with city planners in Malibu … again.
And a member of the K B U U family passes away.

When will these power outages stop?
That was the question in the Point Dume and Paradise Cove areas … where a pair of related power outages left the several hundred customers without electricity.
Two nights ago … as a light mist fell … a pole fire was reported on P C H just east of Paradise Cove.
Power was out overnight for nearly 5 hundred homes overnight.
It was partially restored in the morning.
But the power went out again last night … not restored until after 10 at some homes.

Rain took the afternoon off … but it was raining again early this morning in Malibu.
We got about two tenths of an inch in western Malibu … matched by two tenths of an inch in eastern Malibu (as of 8 a.m.).
Over the last three days … that brings the rainfall total to above two inches.
Rain totals …

Caltrans has announced additional emergency work on P C H … to be done at night.
The state has already started nighttime lane closures east of Big Rock … where the work will include removing rocks and debris … and installing stabilization materials to prevent future rock slides.
Yesterday … they announced that overnight work will also be done at bridges between Cross Creek and the fire station at the Carbon Canyon Road signal.
There’s only one major bridge there … at Malibu Creek … but several smaller culverts and drainage-ways.
Lane closures through the heart of Malibu will start at 7 pm nightly …. through Friday night … weather permitting.
Lanes will reopen at 6 each morning.
Traffic will always be able to get past … but there will be barricades trucks and people in the road
And beyond all that … L A County Waterworks District 29 has a long-planned water main replacement project that is about to start.
Lanes will be closed at night near the Bel Air Bay Club.
In all three construction projects …. traffic will be allowed through using at least one lane.
Please use caution and exercise patience …. these workers have kids.

Storm debris and potential rockfalls are much worse than expected on Decker Canyon Road. The Caltrans closure has been extended now through next Monday.
This is for the lower 1.6 mile segment of Decker Canyon … Route 23 …. starting at PCH and extending up through the switchback.
Closed to all traffic through Monday.

Once again … the California Coastal Commission is disagreeing with Malibu City Hall over a zoning change.
This time … it’s the city’s proposed ordinance to allow motels to have their patrons cars parked by valets … some distance away from the motels.
The city has been preparing a zoning change …. crafted to allow the Malibu Beach Inn to build a swimming pool where its parking lot is.
The hotel’s architect has already been told by the city that parking cars across the street from the property would result in too many pedestrians crossing P C H between signals.
City staff directed the hotel owner to consider other options for addressing the displaced parking associated with the proposed hotel renovation.
The applicant instead is pushing a zoning change that would allow hotels to park their cars off the premises.
But the pedestrian issue … not addressed.
And now … the Coastal Commission has weighed in …. saying they want a crack at the issue before any zoning codes in Malibu are changed.
All this went before the Planning Commission last night …. we’ll have an update tomorrow … it goes before the city council eventually.

The official fundraising arm of the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District raised more than 161 thousand dollars over the last two weeks.
The Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation raised the money to meet a grant challenge from the Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows and MSD Capital … f
The matching funds — which will support programs in all 16 district schools in both Malibu and Santa Monica — were raised during a five-day drive that ended last week.
It was the Foundation’s annual parent pledge campaign.
More than $100,000 was contributed on the last day of the campaign, the most the Foundation has ever raised from community donations on a single day, officials said.
The money predominately is raised in Santa Monica … and is spread among all schools in Malibu and Santa Monica.
Malibu parents …. wary and unhappy with the Santa Monica-dominated school baord … donate comparatively little.
And that stirs unhappiness in Santa Monica … as the two communities continue to negotiate an amicable divorce of the school district … and formation of a Malibu school district.

Service are pending for Rob Stewart … a Las Flores Canyon resident … who went missing after surfacing on a deep water dive last week in the Florida keys.
Stewart was the director of the acclaimed documentary ‘Sharkwater.’
In 2002 … he was part of the Sea Shepard crew … a global anti-poaching armada known for its defense of whales and campaigns against illegal fishing worldwide.
Stewart was on board the Sea Shepherd’s Ocean Warrior in 2002 t… and filmed the effort to battle Costa Rican shark poachers.
Stewart’s video showed the boat showering the poachers with water cannons, slamming into their vessel, and attempting to take control of their boat.
Stewart was using a new rebreather device on some very deep dives off the Florida Keys .. when he died.

Another sad story.
A one-time KBUU volunteer D-J …. Michael O’Neill … died last weekend.
Michael O’Neill was a longterm country rock stalwart in Nashville and L-A … and on the road…
At the age of 24, he cut his teeth opening his first tour for a then-unknown band called U2.
He spent the better part of the next ten years touring with the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn and writing songs with artists from the Grateful Dead … Booker T. and The MG’s … and Chicago.
In the 80s … his band held down a weekly gig at the hottest club in town, The Central (now The Viper Room), playing to packed houses.
As the ’90s approached, ONeill left Southern California for his hometown in the Pacific Northwest to raise horses and focus on his family.
His music … part country crooner, part haggard storyteller.
In 2014 Michael moved back to Los Angeles and … frankly … he had faced some hard times.
He walkedin the door at KBUU the week we signed on … and did a regular Wednesday night Americana music show.
MICHAEL ONEILL CUT 05224 ….
This Saturday night … KBUU will rerun the last Americana Music Series with Michael O’Neill.
We invite you to tune in from 6 to 12 … Saturday night … one last Americana Music Series with Michael O’Neill.
