Letter: Double Standards

I’ll never understand Trump-haters; they go nuts at the mere mention of Trump’s name, and can’t even stay in the same room if one cites Trump’s successes, like Forrest Stewart did in his excellent letter last week. They call Trump a racist, but while Obama bragged about putting minorities on food stamps, Trump brags about creating an economy that provides them jobs. Trump just signed a prison reform bill that freed thousands of inmates, mostly minorities, largely due to the work of his son-in-law, Jared Kushner. If Trump-haters just acknowledged these facts, they’d have to admit he’s a friend of minorities, not a racist. So why can’t they face facts?

Trump is egotistical and arrogant, but so are many politicians and TV stars. He can be tasteless and contrary, but he’s a straight talker—which is rare in Washington—and speaking from one’s heart can be harsh. Democrats explain their irrational hatred for Trump by accusing him of misogyny, but Bill Clinton is a serial sexual predator and rapist. He used Arkansas police to solicit women, then seduced an intern in the Oval Office and lied about it, yet few of them [Democrats] hate Bill. The Virginia lieutenant governor stands accused of rape, but [they] defend him. Can’t they see this is rank hypocrisy? They gush over Hillary, but she was Bill’s enforcer, threatening to destroy the lives of her husband’s many victims if they told the police or press. How can Democrats in good conscience ignore this? We constantly hear about Trump’s private boast that he could grab a woman’s genitals, described by biased commentators as “assaulting women,” but he didn’t say he did it, or even wanted to; it was hyperbole to demonstrate women throw themselves at him. In fact, Trump is spoken of kindly by his ex-wives and even Stormy Daniels. Bill and Hillary are guilty of much worse than Trump, so why don’t Democrats have Clinton derangement? They’re upset that Trump cheats on his wife, but besides Clinton, so did FDR and JFK, whom they adore. A Republican joke goes: If Dems didn’t have double standards, they wouldn’t have any. Could their own hypocrisy be driving them crazy?
