State Senator Fran Pavley paid a visit to the Malibu Rotary Club’s regular meeting Dec. 7, discussing a number of issues, including problems facing California today.

As the senator’s visit coincided with Pearl Harbor Day, the theme of the talk was reflecting on and learning from history. She brought and discussed the book “That Used to Be Us: How America Fell Behind in the World It Invented and How We Can Come Back,” by Thomas L. Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum. Additionally, Pavley talked about her recent trip to China.

Pavley was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Sherman Oaks. She spent 28 years teaching middle school, primarily American History, in Moorpark, California. The former educator was elected as the first mayor of Agoura Hills in 1982 and served four terms as mayor and councilmember from 1982-1997. She became a member of the California Senate where she represents the state’s 23rd district in 2008.
