RUN FOR THE MONEY

The dreamers, the die-hards and the determined all looked grand on the sand at the 20th annual Nautica Malibu Triathlon to benefit the Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric Aids Foundation. Festivities began at the Sunset Room where hard bodies and hopefuls gathered for a pre-mad dash bash.

Amid breathtaking views of the Pacific, the group settled in for a night of celebration. There was revelry all around, but not too much merry making. Dawn’s early light wasn’t far away when thousands of runners, cyclists and swimmers would be on their mark, ready to get set and itching to go.

Strength and stamina would be put to the test during a half-mile plunge in the chilly Pacific, an ambitious 18-mile bike ride and an exhausting four-mile beach run.

From Nautica vet David Duchovny to hot Housewife Felicity Huffman, polished pros to frantic first timers, everyone was willing to give it their all. Smiling and looking relaxed before their upcoming challenge, the men’s relay seemed like no sweat for Team Painless. Although Jim Casey, Kevin Shinnick and Danny Rickard are immersed in top TV jobs that command their attention 24/7, these weekend warriors found time to train and set their sights on victory.

“I’ve done triathlons and grew up swimming and playing water polo,” Shinnick explained. “Danny is a runner and completed the Long Beach marathon last year. And Jim was a strong cyclist. But signing up for this race about four months ago gave us the motivation we needed to start our training again.”

Team Painless finished a respectable 17th out of 56 teams in the men’s relay race. “We will definitely be back again next year,” Shinnick vowed. “Maybe on the winner’s platform.”

Like all the athletes here, the members of Team Painless are number one in spirit and true champions at heart.

There were medals, there were cheers, there was the glow of media glory. But the real winner on this day was Elizabeth Glaser’s Pediatric Foundation, which raised $615,000 in the life-saving race against pediatric AIDS.
