Winds Back Down, After Hottest Day Ever In Malibu

The heat … the discomfort … the fire danger continues today.

But at least the winds are beginning to throttle back.

There are no official National Weather Service temperature records for Malibu.

But longtime Malibu locals say yesterday’s high of 1-0-3 may have been the hottest ever in Malibu … and the overnight low yesterday … 93 … may have set a record as well as the hottest early morning as well.

The official low temperature was 89 degrees at the beach …. it dipped down to a chilly 81 in Upper Malibu Canyon.

Today’s predicted highs will be 1-0-1 in Malibu … although it could be a few degrees cooler in any place lucky enough to get a coastal breeze.

Red Flag Warnings stay up until 6 tonight.

Winds will vary … calm in some places …. 15 miles per hour in others.

Winds gusts should peak at 35 miles per hour in Malibu … .

Extra Fire Strike team Stationed At King Gillette

L-A County firefighters are all working overtime … as large numbers of firefighters have been assembled in strike teams in and around Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains.

Five fire engines … along with 22 strike team members … are stationed overnight and today at the King Gillette Ranch … the park service headquarters in the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains.

There are dorm room up there … fire trucks outside … just like a fire station.

The L A County strike team could be sent to other areas in California …  should the need arise.

They are packed and ready to go.

In Malibu … red flag warnings will stay up through tonight.

No fires broke out yesterday in the local areas.

But a young man and woman decided last night would be a good night for a romantic beach bonfire … in the sand near Sea Level Drive East.

The fire department put it out.

Sheriff’s deputies escorted the couple away.

What were they thinking … apparently is not an arrestable offense … but a reasonable question.

There was a string of small fires yesterday along the 1-18 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley.

Other fires north of Ventura and in San Bernardino County.

SMMUSD Says It Will Draw Up Heat Plans For Next Time

Due to the heat … all schools in the Malibu Santa Monica Unified School District will be on half day schedules today.

Schools buses will be on the early schedule.

School will be dismissed in the noon hour.

Yesterday … the district did not have a plan in place for the predicted heat.

Superintendent Ben Drati announced at 10 in the morning that parents could go to the school and take their kids home … without being marked as absent.

The superintendent says the District will be discussing contingency plans for weather-related issues like this … to be proactive in the future.

The local school district has begun a multi-year process to add air conditioners at all 16 school campuses in Santa Monica and Malibu.

Heat Increases on School Board For Amicable Divorce

A show of force is being called on by local school advocates …. next Monday at the school board meeting in Santa Monica.

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School Board has called a special meeting …  an in depth discussion on school district separation … next Monday at 5.

Advocates for Malibu Public Schools … known as AMPS … calls this meeting critical in moving the separation process forward.

They need a big show of force.

There are several fronts moving right now on the legal and political battle to divorce Malibu from the larger Santa Monica school district.

The city of Malibu has filed formal separation papers … which are moving through the bureaucratic labyrinth in the L A County School Board.

AMPS leaders are hoping to have the local school board onboard … as that process continues.

AMPS maintains a hopeful stance on that … and says they are still working in cooperation with the Santa Monica – Malibu Unified School District.

The big meeting is Monday at 5 … and they need a big show of force.

Rats Meeting Tonight During Third Inning Of Series

Rats … the invasion of rats … at Malibu High School is the subject of a special meeting tonight at Malibu High School at 6.

School district officials will explain the steps they have taken to counter a tidal wave of rodents at the school.

Megadoses of vitamins are being used on the rodents … longterm overdoses of Vitamin D-3 are expected to give them heart attacks … without passing poison into the food chain.

Salmon In Malibu Creeks In Dire Straights

Southern steelhead salmon in the ocean off Malibu continue to decline in population.

Wildlife biologist Rosie Dagit told the Malibu city council last night that just 500 of the fish are thought to exist.

NEWSCART 77109 FISH ROSIE :26 QQQ DIED IN MY HANDS, ACTUALLY.

“The numbers are reallty pretty direly low, not a happy story.

“Malibu Creek used to be, because it’s one of the largest creeks. used to be the real mainstay in for Southern Steelhead in the Santa Monica Bay,

“This year, that was the only fish that came in, and she was a six year old female who came in, and she was emaciated, and she died in my hands, actually.”

The salmon are biologically very important …

The Southern Steel head salmon are thought to be the progenitors for salmonids.

All of the trout … all of the salmon … in North America are thought to have descended from this fish.

And despite the fact that all their habitat has been wiped out …  as they are robust.

When a new lagoon or creek habitat is created for them … they immediately move in from the ocean.

That’s what happened up at Leo Carrillo Beach … where an old bridge was removed to provide a passageway for the fish.

In the first year … up popped Steelhead on the lagoon next to Mulholland at PCH.

This becomes important … as the state considers removing Rindge Dam.

Removing that silted up structure would open up 8 miles of upper Mapibu Creek and Cold Creek habitat… the old Rindge Dam blocks the creek three miles above the ocean.

Home Prices Near ’07 Bubble Levels

Home prices in Southern California tied an all-time high last month.

The local real estate market continues to surge … according to the Los Angeles Times.

The median price for a residence in the six-county region has jumped nearly 10 percent from a year earlier.

It’s now $505,000, according to the data firm CoreLogic said Tuesday.

That matches a price level reached in 2007 before the housing bubble burst and the economy cratered.
