Star trumpet player, former A&M Records owner and Malibu Resident Herb Alpert is giving $300,000 to Los Angeles City College’s music department, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The money will be given over three years, benefitting a variety of uses within the music department. These include new computer equipment, musical instrument maintenance and two-year scholarships for students who will have their own record label—Herb Alpert Scholars.
“My goal with the Foundation has always been to help level the playing field and create opportunities for talented young people. My brother David attended LACC and our family has supported the college for over two decades. I’ve seen firsthand how critical LACC is to giving young people the tools they need to succeed,” Alpert said in an announcement by his foundation.
Herb Alpert and his foundation have worked with the Los Angeles City College to provide students with scholarships for the past 22 years and this will be the largest grant given exclusively to its music department.
Herb Alpert is a dedicated arts philanthropist as well as a visual artist who has recently given back to the Malibu and Santa Monica community.
He donated a sculpture titled “Freedom,” which is now displayed in Malibu near the intersection of the Pacific Coast Highway and Rambla Vista. He has also displayed a collection of his work at the Robert Berman Gallery in the Bergamot Station Arts Center in Santa Monica.
Alpert was also honored with the 2012 National Medal of Arts by President Obama earlier this year.
