Malibu City Council unanimously approved a $38,200 skatepark design contract on Tuesday of last week with Wormhoudt Inc., which specializes in designing public skateparks.

An ad hoc committee and members of the skateboard community decided on Wormhoudt after 10 design consultants proposed designs. Wormhoudt has designed more than 125 skate parks since 1974, according to a staff report.

The city is hoping to build the skatepark at Malibu Bluffs Park but must first do an analysis to assess the site’s viability.

Some residents who live near Bluffs Park oppose the skatepark being built there, arguing that it would impact the “scenic corridor” and might cause too much noise.
