Honoring the past

Sharon Barovsky ran on the campaign motto, “For Future Generations,” meaning what? What is this council offering future generations? Anything goes now, totally ignoring the goals and objectives the caring residents established as they did the General Plan: to keep Malibu rural and preserve our quality of life, based on respect for the special natural beauty and the wildlife surrounding us. To me, it’s clear that the staff is under the influence of the architects, engineers, and expediters hired by developers to process projects. Soon nothing that we know of this special place, Malibu, will remain.

So, Sharon, what is the heritage for the future generations?

We just honored the Chumash, the native tribe of Malibu, which was treated badly. Burial grounds were dug up and tossed away to allow for development. How nice to honor a culture that lives close to nature, and who respects the Malibu some of us love, while out of ignorance, indifference or corruption, the decimation continues unchecked. What about the other indigenous living things -native plants and wildlife that are tossed away because everything should be manicured and urbanized.

Why aren’t our children taught to respect nature? Maybe they should go for a hike in the hills along the disappearing trails and learn about the natural beauty that exists in nature. Do the new residents you’re pandering to really understand the price we pay for the amenities that they want and think they need? If you really need ball fields, maybe you should move to Calabasas and leave the ocean to the surfers, the hills to the wildlife and the preservation of our quality of life to those that respect this special place. Soon the decimation of Malibu will be the legacy left by those whose only motivation is”What’s in it for me.”
