The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) will be conducting a DUI checkpoint in the City of Malibu on the evening of Aug. 21 between the hours of 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. in order to help keep intoxicated drivers off the road.
Deputies will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment as well as proper licensing. Those who are suspected of being under the influence of drugs will be evaluated by specially-trained officers.
DUIs were responsible for 802 deaths in California and nearly 10,000 deaths nationally in 2012. Research shows that well-publicized checkpoints and proactive patrols can help reduce crashes caused by DUI by up to 20 percent, according to the LASD.
Drivers caught driving under the influence can expect jail time, fines and possible license suspension.
