The Dume Room, a bar in Point Dume that many say is a relic to old-school Malibu with its eclectic mix of customers that includes celebrities and ordinary people, will be forced to close at the end of the month, co-owner Mario Vitale told The Malibu Times on Tuesday. The bar opened at Point Dume Plaza, now known as Point Dume Village, in 1972.

“After 35 years of serving Malibu, I have gotten written notice to leave by Nov. 30,” Vitale said. “It seems the Dume Room doesn’t fit into Zan Marquis’ vision.”

Marquis purchased Point Dume Village last year. Since he took over, major changes have begun, including the announcement that Cooke’s Family Market will close at the end of the year and be replaced next summer by a Pavillion’s. A call was made to the Point Dume Village’s management office. The person who answered said she would not comment on whether the Dume Room is being forced to close.

Vitale said he is looking at other possible Malibu locations for the Dume Room.
