Activist for the disabled enters Assembly race

Democrat Shawn Casey O’Brien, an activist talk show host and writer, this week entered the race for the 41st Assembly District (which includes Malibu) seat.

O’Brien, who walks on crutches due to cerebral palsy, is the co-host and co-producer of “Access Unlimited,” a weekly talk radio show on KPFK-FM that focuses on issues related to the disabled community. He is the former executive director of the Unique People’s Voting Project, an organization that aims to increase the political power of disabled Californians.

O’Brien joins four other Democrats seeking to replace Pavley, who will be termed-out at the end of this year. The other candidates are Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District President Julia Brownley, Calabasas Mayor Barry Groveman and Santa Monica residents Jonathan Levey and Kelly Hayes-Raitt.

A lawsuit filed by Malibu-based Sybersound Records against several music production and karaoke companies was dismissed earlier this month by a Central California federal judge.

Sybersounds asked for $200 million and accused the companies of wrongful interference with business, unfair competition and unfair trade practices. Sybersounds accused one of the companies, BCI Eclipse Co., of underreporting sales to publishers and producing unlicensed karaoke records.

The lawsuit cannot be refiled.
