The surprising thing about last night’s city council meeting was not the rubber-stamp approval of the Trancas Market development by the council, but the unquestioned embrace of the project by many of my neighbors in Malibu West; even dismissing the sensible concerns regarding traffic, noise and safety raised by their own HOA board.
The supporters of the development have insisted on framing the debate as “for” or “against” rather than focus on these important details. Further, I find it irresponsible that the city would approve a project that doubles the size of a shopping area, while creating a new mecca for visitors and yet, does NOTHING to allow for a substantial increase in traffic at Trancas and PCH. Talk about planning for the future.
I heard much about the amenities and convenience this development will bring (many of which I welcome). Yet I can’t help but think that you don’t get anything for free in life. And one day soon when you try to drive out of Malibu West during the height of the summer, it may not all seem quite as “convenient” as you thought.
