Something has been bugging me for a very long time and the cover story about the California Wildlife Center suffering greatly as the economy falters just reopened the wound. In 2008, the City of Malibu granted Malibu Green Machine, a group that wants to plant medians in Malibu, a whopping $50,000. You read that right. Talk about pork! And it was for fundraising materials, not even for the darn plants. How silly is this as we have the ocean to look at while we drive and a full-scale economic crisis!
The Malibu Urgent Care Center, our only lifeline if someone suffers a heart attack or snakebite, got a paltry $5,000. I believe the Wildlife Center got only $3,000. What a travesty!
Speaking as a wildlife rescuer of our native tortoises and turtles, we got a very small grant a couple of years ago which we were grateful for, but our own donations are down 80 percent since then. So this begs the question. Aren’t human lives and animal lives more important than plants in a median?
