Bravo to our City Council for last week’s vote in support of the Tibetan people. We have all painfully witnessed great and powerful nations behaving with an ignorance, which seems to be commensurate with their power. Through such ignorance, they inflict boundless suffering on people, animals, ecosystems and cultures.
Small bodies such as this one, by bearing witness to the Tibetan and Chinese tragedy, can send out a ray of hope with untold life-giving results.
For example, two weeks ago, I dined at our Sage restaurant with a friend who is active in Tibetan and Nepali affairs. That day, he had received an e-mail from a total stranger who had found his Web site and, in desperation, had contacted him pleading for help. He is a Tibetan living in Mongolia under house arrest and is being threatened with deportation to China, which could mean torture and death. The State Department is now working on his behalf, as is Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office. A life may be saved by small gestures that have wonderful consequences.
Thank you Malibu.
