Days after issuing an announcement that Malibu radio station 97.5 KBU would be on air by the end of February, station manager Hans Laetz said Tuesday that progress at the radio station has hit a speed bump. The signal splitter, a device necessary for the regular broadcast, is malfunctioning, forcing station operations to be delayed at least a week.

“These things happen,” said Laetz.

Laetz also shared that even when the station does go live, it will only cover western Malibu, since the FCC has denied the application for KBU’s sister station in eastern Malibu, citing a paperwork error.

Laetz called the issue a “political” one and suggested that Malibu citizens who are concerned over the fate of the eastern station could contact the FCC in Washington.
