The Los Angeles Count Sheriff’s Department will conduct a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint in Malibu, from 7 p.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Saturday morning.

The checkpoints are designed to curb drug- and alcohol-impaired driving, as well as deter unlicensed drivers from getting behind the wheel.

“Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough,” according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Penalties for drivers caught driving impaired range from fines, fees, DUI classes, insurance increases and jail.

The last DUI checkpoint in Malibu, conducted the first weekend in June, led to 21 arrests.
