Reading Partners, the national organization that provides students in under-resourced schools with the grade-level reading support, is looking to expand its impact in the upcoming school year. The nonprofit is calling for more community tutors to join its progressive movement.

Reading Partners does outreach in one Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District School — John Muir Elementary School.

According to the nonprofit’s annual report, released most recently for the 2015-16 school year, the reading centric program was proven to be highly effective, with more than 600 students in 10 partnered schools being matched with nearly 800 community volunteers.

This resulted in a 100 percent of principals across the Los Angeles area reporting improved school wide reading progress and 97 percent of teachers reporting Reading Partners is valuable to their school.

“I couldn’t be happier with the performance of our students this year,” Laura Zachar, executive director for the region, said in a written statement. “We know that with outcomes like these, we are creating lifelong readers, and the skills we are developing will have enormous impact on their success in school and in life.”

Reading Partners wants to keep the momentum, and aims to match 910 community volunteers with 680 struggling readers in the Los Angeles Area during the 2016-17 school year.
