The victim of a shooting that took place at Malibu Creek State Park on Friday, June 22, has been identified as 35-year-old Tristan Beaudette, as confirmed by case detail from the LA County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Beaudette was camping in a tent with his two daughters, ages two and four, when he was shot in the upper torso at approximately 4:45 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene; his daughters were not injured.

No motive or suspect information has been obtained by the LA County Sheriff’s Department. The investigation is ongoing. In the meantime, all overnight camping at Malibu Creek State Park has stopped at least through Thursday, June 28.

According to reports, Beaudette lived in Irvine, Calif. With a Ph.D. in chemistry from UC Berkeley, he was known for his skills as a chemist; on social media, the Ainslie lab at University of North Carolina shared, “Tristan was an exceptional father, and chemist … He will be missed.”

A GoFundMe page for the “Tristan Beaudette Memorial Fund” has been set up on behalf of Beaudette’s wife, Erica. According to the page, the family was in the process of relocating to the Bay Area.
