Overnight winds rake the Malibu Hills.

60 MPH Gusts Hit Upper Las Flores

The city puts off pot rules.

And goes into the power business.

This is Malibu’s Only Local Daily News.

It’s the [[[ Thursday  ]]] edition … from Radio Malibu …. 99-point-1 … KBUU News.

Good morning …. I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

City Council Rejects Recreational Pot Sales, For Now

The City of Malibu put the brakes on expanding marijuana services on January First … when pot becomes legal for recreational use in the state.

The city council last night voted to ban the sale of recreational marijuana at the city’s two medical marijuana dispensaries.

At least for the time being.

Malibu’s city council has been split on the issue of marijuana for years … in that was still on display at a special meeting last night.

Council member Lou LaMonte repeated his strong stand … that sales of recreational drugs should not be legalized in Malibu.

NEWSCART 77427 LAMONTEPOT     :16 QQQ: by state law.

The only two things that we have to decide by January First is recreational marijuana… whether we are going to ban it or not … and to deal with the six plants that people are allowed to have by state law. “ [[[END QUOTE]]]

And by recreational marijuana … La Monte apparently refers to allowing the sale of marijuana in the city.

LaMonte has opposed that consistently … and came out again last night against allowing the two marijuana stores in Malibu to deliver cannabis to sick people.

Laura Rosenthal said times are changing… pot is here… and it’s time to adjust.

NEWSCART 77428 ROSENTHALPOT :15.  QQQ: IN OTHER STATES.

“I was reminded of Reefer Madness, which was a propaganda film: ‘Oh my God you know the whole world is stoned all the time, it’s going to be this terrible terrible thing!” And I think that that’s not what they found in other states.” [[[END QUOTE]]]

In the end … the city council voted 3 to 2 to ban commercial sales of recreational marijuana in Malibu.

But mayor Skylar Peak said he will vote to legalize the commercial sale of marijuana for recreational purposes … as soon as the city can come up with a workable plan to do that.

NEWSCART 77429 PEAKPOT :10 QQQ: AND COMMERCIAL CULTIVATION.

“We had best get an item back in the first quarter of this year …  that outlines licensing for recreational sales… delivery … and commercial cultivation.”  [[[END QUOTE]]]

A result of the vote … it no longer will be a misdemeanor crime in Malibu to grow six plants of marijuana for your own use.

Unless you talk to the federal government.

[[[NOTE: This story was corrected to remove garbled text from Rosenthal’s quote.”]]]

Malibu To Join Edison-Bypass Cooperative

Malibu’s city council also last night voted to join the Los Angeles County C-C-A … a government Cooperative aimed at undercutting Southern California Edison’s Monopoly hold on electric generation capacity.

More than 60 cities i in southern California are making a legal deal with each other to buy wholesale electricity on the open market … and then sell it to individual businesses and residents.

Such cooperatives have saved money … and increased the use of green electric power … because they bypass expensive contracts signed by the Edison company for coal or natural gas powered electricity.

Edison will still be responsible for the distribution system … keeping it safe and reliable.

KBUU-LP Gets Final OK For 99.1 And Greater Power

Finally … the Federal Communications Commission in Washington D-C granted KBUU-LP a license to cover Malibu California on 99.1 mHz at 71 watts.

This is the final step in KBUU’s three-year effort to improve its signal to eastern Malibu.

KBUU had been operating on a construction permit at that frequency and power temporarily since Nov. 14.

So … that’s the final goodbye to 97.5 … although we still have a few programs that have not been updated with the new frequency.
