The Malibu High and Middle School Band and Orchestra perform at a winter concert.

The Malibu High and Middle School Band and Orchestra performed winter concerts Dec. 12 and 13, marking the first time the orchestra and band have played together and featured professional-level pieces.

The high school concert showcased the high school wind ensemble, strings, full orchestra and jazz band with guest soloists Hailey Hoffman and John Kibler. The middle school concert featured the middle school wind ensemble, strings, full orchestra and jazz band. The Malibu High orchestra program is lead by Dr. Maia Zander.

“This is the first year our string players are at a high enough level to combine with the band program and do full orchestra pieces,” Zander said. “I love seeing them rise above the standard and level of what should be possible and do professional-level, unbelievable performances.”

Last year, the Malibu Middle School Orchestra won several first place awards in district and regional competitions, including “superior” rating at a local music festival in Santa Monica and the best overall orchestra performance for middle school in the Disneyland competition. The Malibu Middle School orchestra will participate in further competitions in January.

“One of the things that is so special about our music programs in Malibu is the support from the parents and the community,” Zander said. “I feel incredibly fortunate to have such dedicated music students, supportive parents and an amazing community.”
