Two students sort through books for the collection to support BookEnds.

Webster Elementary School students from Marcia Nix’s second-grade class and Lori Rose’s forth-grade held a student-run book drive on behalf of BookEnds, the Los Angeles-based program that helps schools in need stock their libraries. The children collected 3,774 new or gently used books and delivered them to Stoner Ave. Elementary School in Mar Vista.

The students in these two classes were responsible for collecting, counting, organizing and packaging all of the books, which were donated by Webster families. BookEnds began in 1998 and since that time more than 140,000 BookEnds student volunteers have filled 441 barren libraries throughout the Greater Los Angeles area, delivering more than 1.2 million books into the hands of more than 300,000 at-risk students.
