I attended the Malibu State of Our Schools events cosponsored by SMMUSD, CEPS (Community for Excellent Public Schools) and the Santa Monica- Malibu Council of PTAs. It was supposed to be a celebration of how wonderful the school district is doing. I heard about the scores and I heard about many of the great alumni that are making a difference in outer space and in public office. I was even impressed that the two board members speaking were products of our learning community.
But as I sat there, I just couldn’t help wondering why no one from the district had done the simple research to figure out how many teachers, aides and other employees who work for our district are also alumni. I want the board and the district to highlight the local successes that are the employees of SMMUSD. These are the people who make the district a wonderful place for students and make our district worth celebrating.
