Letter: The Bigger Picture

We all know of the horrific tragedy that occurred in Orlando. We also know of the new controversial issues that have been brought to light as a result of this atrocious crime — one being loss of privacy regarding the deceased’s sexuality. Many people have held journalists accountable to be mindful of what they report, because they may out the victims’ sexualities.

Gender identification has been a controversial topic for too long and, in my opinion, it always will be. It has become controversial down to the Constitutional level because it involves human rights.

While publicizing personal information about each victim could be seen as a violation of personal privacy if the victims were still alive, I think we should be reminded of and thankful for the role journalists play in our society. In a time where our community comes together to mourn the innocent lives of 49 people, we look to journalists for true news.

It is important to look at the bigger picture, which is to honor each individual who was lost the tragedy and not about journalists accidentally letting out their secrets. If we were to have to choose between life and having our secrets kept, we should choose life every time. It would be the right thing to do.

Thank you to all the journalists who work hard to deliver what goes on in the world to our front door. You are the reason the world is united against crimes like this, and you are the reason we all come together to support each other in a time of need.
