Two of the largest planned commercial developments in Malibu to be heard at Thursday’s planning meeting.

The proposed Malibu Bay Company Development Agreement, which has slowly been making its way through the environmental process, jumped a major hurdle last week when the completed Draft Environmental Impact Report was released to the public. Next, a series of workshops and hearings regarding the environmental impact report are scheduled to begin Oct. 2 and conclude by Dec. 12.

The proposed 20-year development agreement would cover the land use of the Malibu Bay Company’s 12 properties within the City of Malibu, which are clustered in three general locations: the Malibu Civic Center, Point Dume and the base of Trancas Canyon. Under the agreement, up to 289,995 square feet of new commercial development would be allowed on approximately 78 acres of commercial-zoned land. Twenty homes could be built on the remaining 32 acres of residential-zoned land, and 25 acres would be preserved as permanent open space. The Malibu Bay Company would also gift an 18.87-acre site to the city, and donate $5,000,000 for the development of ball fields and a community/senior/teen center. This week’s hearing on the development agreement is billed solely as the first in a series of “non-action, informative workshops” to discuss the project.

The development agreement would go before voters for final approval.

Forge Lodge

The proposed 32-unit bed and breakfast lodge, which would be located near the BeauRivage restaurant, would consist of eight, four-unit, two-story buildings, a pool and a pool deck. Under the plan, the restaurant would stay, but the existing boutique, trailers, storage facility and single-family dwelling unit would be removed. The project is on the agenda for the next meeting.

The Planning Commission meeting will take place Sept. 19, 6:30 p.m., at the HRL Auditorium, 3011 Malibu Canyon Rd. More information can be obtained at the city’s Web site at www.ci.malibu.ca.us.
