I have been verbally informed by a Malibuite last night that a call to the city of Malibu staff says that they will grant a utility tax exemption “while meeting all other requirements of the utility tax exemption if you are on Social Security (period).” However, as my letter points out, line item 3 under qualifications states “Receiving Supplemental Social Security Benefits.” Googling the referenced “Supplemental Social Security” will tell you that what the city staff says and what is in the City Code conflict and may need to be re-worded to reflect the current practice. I’m sure that the Malibu seniors would like to know prior to the expanding of the Utility Tax base in April.
