Robert L. Belzer, a former Point Dume resident who was most recently living in Oceanside, died on Nov. 24. He was 82.

Belzer was born on Jan. 29, 1924 in Portland, Ore. to Louis and Nora Belzer. He attained his undergraduate degree in physical sciences from UC Berkeley and graduate degree in mathematics from Stanford University. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and had distinguished careers with both the RAND Corp. for more than 20 years as the director of the Washington Defense Research Division and with Northrop Aircraft as a director of marketing for the F-15 fighter jet.

Along with his three sons, Belzer participated in the martial arts, becoming a member of the American Judo and Jujitsu Federation and eventually serving as the Southern California area director. Belzer also enjoyed dancing and playing tennis.

A lifelong member of the Catholic Church, he and his family were faithful parishioners at Our Lady of Malibu during the years they lived in Point Dume and later at St. John Fisher in Palos Verdes.

Belzer is survived by his wife of 17 years, Betty Belzer; sons Steven R. Belzer and Michael P. Belzer and many other friends and family members. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Delores Belzer, and youngest son, Robert S. Belzer. A funeral mass will take place at St. John Fisher Church, located at 5448 Crest Road in Rancho Palos Verdes, on Saturday at 1 p.m.
