Letter: A Poison-Free Community

The following statement was read at the Malibu City Council Meeting on June 27:

The Diablo Nuclear Power Plant has been emitting  poisonous radiation into the air and Pacific Ocean as part of their operating plan for over 30 years.

Since 2011, we have continuously been exposed to radiation pouring out of Fukushima. Because of these increases in radiation, the Environmental Protections Agency (EPA) has gutted the Safe Water Drinking Act by proposing a thousand fold increase in radioactivity for our drinking water.

The EPA has never tested the 2.5 billion pounds of toxic pesticides used in the U.S. every year. The Center of Disease Control and Prevention has measured 212 chemicals, including 44 pesticides in the tissue samples of dead people.

A child’s biological system is developing rapidly and can be dangerously disrupted by micro doses of toxins and their young bodies are not fully able to detoxify. Toxins accumulate over a lifetime, and little is known about how multiple chemicals react in our bodies to increase the risk of disease.

Instead of Malibu adding to the accumulation of poisons in our environment, wouldn’t it be wonderful for our small community to be poison free and a leader in organic practices?

I think so.
