Suicidal Man Leaps From Helicopter Near Malibu Pier
We still don’t have the name of the poor man who jumped out of a helicopter …. to his eventual death … off Malibu Pier on Saturday.
We do know … however … that the charter helicopter pilot tried some aerial maneuvers to try to keep the man inside the chopper.
Banking in a turn as long as he could … the pilot tried to use gravity to keep the man from jumping out the open doorway of the two-seat chopper.
L A sheriffs deputies say the pilot was from Star helicopters … a chopper rental firm in Hawthorne.
The lead detective in the case told CBS2 the pilot tilted the helicopter and tried to grab the 42-year-old man to prevent him from jumping, but that he had to eventually stabilize the aircraft.
The Federal Aviation Administration says in an e-mail that the pilot of the Robinson R22 helicopter told investigators … his passenger jumped out of the aircraft at about 1:10 p.m…. about 1 mile south of the Malibu Pier.
Malibu Councilman Jefferson Wagner saw lifeguards bringing in the man’s body from the water onto the pier.
He tells the L A Times that the victim appeared to be a white man wearing what looked to him to be a hospital wristband.
Deputies say they have found a suicide note.
The victim has been identified only as a 42 year old male.
SCE Malibu Canyon Road Closures To Resume
The summer is over … and Southern California Edison and cellphone companies are resuming their work to replace the spindly wooden power poles in Malibu Canyon.
That means power pole construction on Malibu Canyon Road day and night.
The daytime work will not result in any lane closures … crews will work on the side of the narrow road.
But at night … flaggers … trucks and portable lights will be on the road.
Lane cllosures will start at 9 P-M … and will extend until 5 A-M.
That will be Sunday nights through Thursday nights.
Some full road closures could be required for crew and driver safety … the crews will try to give advance notification of those overnight closures are likely.
Poles are being replaced on 3-1/2 miles of Malibu Canyon Road … between the Hughes Research Center and Piuma Road.
82 poles are being worked on altogether.
In the first phase of the project last spring … 21 poles were completed.
That leaves 48 poles to replace … and 13 more poles to remove.
Edison expects to be working in the canyon through March of next year.
The pole replacement project is the result of legal action taken against Southern California Edson as a result of the Canyon Fire … 10 years ago next month.
An overloaded wooden pole snapped in a windstorm … and the resulting brushfire burned down to the beach within 6 hours.
About two dozen homes and businesses were destroyed … total damage and firefighting costs exceeded a half billion dollars.
Citizens and the state went after the utility companies …. and won 67 million dollars in settlements.
Part of that money is paying to replace the overloaded poles in Malibu Canyon.

Latigo Beach House Goes To Planning Commission
Here in Malibu … the Planning Commission meets tonight.
Major items on the agenda include a house at Latigo Beach … which has been under design and getting permits since the year 20-11.
The house is on the side of very steep hill … next to the condos at the east end of Latigo Shore Drive.
The house sets up a possible battle with the Coastal Commission.
Their staff has asked for the homeowner to dedicate a path down to the beach.
The homeowner says no.
But the plans for the house require waiver of several coastal development rules … including building height … size … its location on a near-cliff … and its closeness to the waves.
That means that … whatever the city decides … the matter may end up at the Coastal Commission.
SM Airport May Get Grassy Ends
In news from down the coast …
The contract has been approved to to shorten the runway at Santa Monica Airport.
And the city council there is studying if the ends of the runway might be pulverized and planted with grass.
The 5 thousand foot runway os being cut to 35 hundred feet … to provide safety buffers and to make it impossible for many corporate jets to use it.
Some residents are angry … they want th airport closed now …. and they consider the deal to keep it open for 11 years before closing it is a sellout.
The business jet people are also furious.
The Santa Monica Airport Association and other aviation interests have an appeal pending before the U.S. Federal Court of Appeals in Washington.
That trial is expected to be heard in early 2018.
The Santa Monica Airport Associaiton says it is confident that the court will overturn the agreement between the F A A and the City of Santa Monica.
They claim the city of Santa Monica will have to return the runway to its original length.
And they will have to explain to taxpayers … both the cost of the $3.5 million runway shortening … and the cost of rebuilding the runway.
Bu the legal argument for that unprecedented action … is not explained.
Santa Monica Airport is the closest general aviation runway to Malibu.
