Pepperdine’s annual Waves of Flags display is now on the lawn at Alumni Park.

The display features nearly 3,000 flags to commemorate each of the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. One of the victims of that day included Tom Burnett, an alumnus of Pepperdine’s Graziadio School of Business and Management, who was on the United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania.

The University will also continue its tradition of holding a brief ceremony at Heroes Garden to honor those who lost their lives on Sept. 11. Heroes Garden is an outdoor chapel located on the Drescher Graduate Campus overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 12:15–12:45 p.m., with prayers offered by Associate Chaplain Jen Christy, a devotional by Seaver graduate and past military commander Matthew McCay and a scripture reading by Pepperdine’s Associate Professor of Public Policy Michael Shires.

A memorial wreath will also be presented at the end of the event as token of remembrance of the day.
