Letter: New Energy and Spirit

There is no mystery about how and why Hillary Clinton was defeated, and Donald Trump won the presidency. As one pundit put it, “Trump took off his earbuds and heard the music of other people, and Hillary Clinton did not.”

As for what comes next? Well, as the saying goes, “It isn’t the man who makes the office, but the office that makes the man.” And it is in this belief and spirit that we’re ready to give this man a chance — to hope that President Trump will bring about a new energy, new spirit, new ideas and most of all, new prosperity to all Americans. Will this be difficult? Absolutely, but again, we hold hope, and even some confidence, that Trump will be up to both this task and the vital one of invigorating and improving American relationships around the world.

As for now, we deplore the outbreaks of violence being carried out by those in opposition to Trump’s election. This in not the American way. In America, everyone is free to express an opinion through peaceful protest and by becoming involved in making change, but not through destruction and violence.

In America, we the people choose our leaders in a way that has served our republic well for some 240 years now. And, I think, it might well serve the young people who’ve taken to the streets in violent protest to reflect upon and take a lesson from this and come to an understanding about how our democracy works and has survived.
