Letter: Preserving Malibu

Mr. Reiner has made the specious claim that the previous city councils and the eight former mayors of Malibu have wanted to, in his words, “see Malibu overdeveloped” and continue to do so by advocating the defeat of Measure R.

Mr. Reiner should be made aware that these past mayors were the same ones who managed to buy the 19-acre Chili Cook-Off site and stop 125,000 square feet of commercial development in the Civic Center. In fact, some of us stood out in front of Ralphs, day after day, holding a tin cup, soliciting money to buy the land.

Today it is a park — not a shopping center. These were the same mayors who instituted the most stringent zoning laws in California to limit commercial development in Malibu. The irony is Mr. Reiner’s Measure R, in fact, will give the voters the right to far exceed the current restrictions that past mayors have established to control runaway development in the Civic Center.

Save the Civic Center and vote “no” on Measure R.
