Local eighth grader Zachary Bornstein (pictured) won the pentathlon event at the 2009 AAU Indoor National Track & Field Championships on Feb. 21. The two-day event took place in Merrillville, In. The pentathlon consists of five events: the 55-meter hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump and the 1000-meter run. Bornstein will also be competing this summer at the USATF National Championships and Junior Olympics in the pentathlon and pole vault events. He has won multiple national titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field over the past several years. Zachary competes on Oaks Christian School’s cross country, soccer, and track and field teams. He also competes for the United Track Club in Westlake.
