When kangaroos in Australia are killed for their skins, the joeys are often yanked from their mothers’ pouches and stomped to death. If Senate Bill 880 passes, Californians will be contributing to this slaughter and to the decimation of the entire species. This nasty bit of legislation would make it legal to sell kangaroo skins in this state for the first time in 37 years.
The timing couldn’t be worse for kangaroos. Their populations have dwindled to the smallest they have been in a decade. Although the bill is only supposed to allow the sale of skins from nonendangered kangaroos, this restriction will be impossible to enforce. People who kill kangaroos hunt at night, when it’s difficult to distinguish between endangered and nonendangered animals.
Please contact the Senate Natural Resources Committee before it votes on May 8 and ask committee members to oppose SB 880. For more information, visit PETA.org.
