A boat caught fire and sank about two miles off the coast of Paradise Cove in Malibu on Saturday evening.
A call came in just before 7 p.m. that a boat was in distress.
Marina del Rey sheriffs and lifeguards from LA County stations in both Marina del Rey and Malibu set out to rescue those on board the flaming vessel; however, it was a passing boat of civilians that ended up rescuing those on board.
In total, four passengers, three adults and one child, were rescued from the sinking boat, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer Anderson at the Coast Guard Headquarters in Long Beach.
Anderson said that the case was primarily being handled by Marina del Rey sheriffs.
“There was no Coast Guard involvement,” said Anderson.
“I believe it sank in the location where it caught fire,” said Anderson of the vessel.
At the time of publication, the four passengers, with no injuries reported, were nearing the Marina del Rey Sheriff’s Department, where they will be interviewed and released, according to spokespeople at the Sheriff’s Department.
