Well, it finally has happened. I regret to announce that I, the last original volunteer for the City of Malibu, have decided to retire.
I have volunteered at City Hall for 11 years, mostly as receptionist on Monday afternoons and Wednesday mornings. I believe I have always acted professionally, and my efforts have helped the staff as well as the public that visited City Hall. I believe the time I have spent at City Hall has allowed the very capable regular receptionist to provide filing, typing, etc. help to the overburdened staff in the different departments as needed. For some reason now the receptionist is being used less and less for these other tasks while I am present despite the fact that the departure of staff members has left the city understaffed, creating a condition that has become increasingly uncomfortable for me.
One of the reasons the residents in this community worked so hard to become a city was to get out from under the county’s “rule.” As I recall, getting the new city underway, with limited assets, the plan was to elect a City Council, hire experienced staff, and utilize volunteers from the community in order to maintain local control and limited expenses. And for a short time, this arrangement actually worked and many residents volunteered their time.
I will miss those hours spent at City Hall, and all the friends I have made. But, time marches on and so will I to find other things to do, or really retire.
