Joys of farming

Thank you for the story on Vital Zuman Sustainable Farm in The Malibu Times last month. It was timely and informative especially for those interested in local agriculture. At the same time I want to point to inaccuracies.

Vital Zuman Sustainable Farm is not a “model of socialist, industrial organization” nor will it ever be, nor have I ever said that, nor anything like it nor envisioned it as such, nor will I at any time in the future. Vital Zuman is simply a small family farm begun in 1954 by my parents, George and Alice Cunningham.

The farm is one of the oldest, continuously running, organic farm stands in the country. A small family farm is all about family heritage, hard work, the growing of real food for real people. The effort is great and although the farm does not give plots of land to individuals for their own exclusive use, many volunteers who work with the farm find that they are welcomed to plant and harvest areas of the farm for their own benefit and that of all.
