Marie “Deary” Nelson died May 7 at the age of 98. Through her grandsons, Bo and Jesse Fishman, she was known as the “other mother” by many of their friends in Malibu. She lived here with her daughter, Jane, and husband Ed Fishman, along with her son, George, also known as “Uncle Pete” for the past 15 years. Her son, Tom, and daughter, Ann, along with many other family members reside in New Mexico.
Deary earned her master’s degree at New Mexico State University and followed her passion, which was teaching children to read. She married George Nelson, who was an educator and school superintendent. The final years of her teaching career were devoted to the first grade children on the Mescalero Apache Reservation in New Mexico.
